How it works

Attached to the て-form of a verb to express trying an action to see how it goes or what the result is. The みる comes from 見る (to see) but is written in kana. It implies experimentation rather than a serious attempt to succeed.

動詞のて形に付いて、「試しに~してみる」「どうなるか~してみる」という意味を表す。「見る」が語源だがひらがなで書く。成功を目指す努力ではなく『ためしに』というニュアンス。

  • このふく、ちょっときてみてもいいですか。

Is it okay if I try putting on these clothes?

Notes

  • みる is written in hiragana, not 見る, in this grammar.この文法の「みる」は漢字「見る」ではなくひらがなで書く。
  • Conjugates as a normal verb (みた, みたい, みてください).普通の動詞のように活用する(みた・みたい・みてください)。
  • Implies attempting/experimenting to see the outcome.結果を見るために『試しにやってみる』気持ちを表す。
