How it works

~てしまう has two main nuances: (1) completion — finishing an action thoroughly or all the way; and (2) regret/unintendedness — doing something one didn't mean to, or that turned out badly. Context and tone decide which meaning applies. The casual contractions are ~ちゃう (て) and ~じゃう (で).

「~てしまう」には主に二つのニュアンスがあります。(1) 完了:動作を完全に・すっかり終える。(2) 後悔・意外:意図せずやってしまった、残念な結果になった。どちらの意味かは文脈と口調で決まります。口語の短縮形は「~ちゃう」(て)・「~じゃう」(で)です。

Formation

Verb て-form + しまう (/ で-form + じまう)

Examples

  • しゅくだいはもうぜんぶやってしまいました。

I've already finished all my homework.

  • でんしゃにだいじなかさをわすれてしまった。

I went and left my important umbrella on the train.

  • おいしくて、ケーキをひとりでたべてしまった。

It was so good that I ended up eating the whole cake by myself.

Notes

  • Two readings: completion ('do thoroughly/finish') vs. regret/accidental ('end up doing'). Tone and context decide.「完了(すっかり終える)」と「後悔・うっかり(~してしまった)」の二つの意味があり、口調と文脈で判断します。
  • で-ending verbs become ~でしまう / casual ~じゃう (読んでしまう → 読んじゃう, 飲んでしまう → 飲んじゃう).「で」で終わる動詞は「~でしまう」、口語は「~じゃう」(読んでしまう→読んじゃう、飲んでしまう→飲んじゃう)。
  • The completion sense often appears with もう/全部; the regret sense often with うっかり/つい.完了の意味は「もう・全部」、後悔の意味は「うっかり・つい」と一緒に使われることが多いです。
