How it works

~ておく expresses doing something in advance as preparation for a future need, or doing something and leaving it in that state. Common nuances: (1) preparation ('do beforehand'), and (2) leaving as-is ('let it stay'). The casual contraction is ~とく (and ~どく for でおく).

I'll clean the room beforehand, before the guests arrive.

I booked the hotel in advance before the trip.

Notes

  • Casual contraction: ~
  • Distinguish from ~てある: ~ておく = the act of doing something in advance (verb of doing); ~てある = the resulting state already exists.「~てある」と区別:「~ておく」は前もって行う動作、「~てある」はすでにその状態が存在することを表します。
  • Often pairs with 前に / までに to mark the preparation deadline.「前に/までに」と一緒に使い、準備の期限を示すことが多いです。
