~ぎみ

How it works

Indicates that one feels or shows a slight degree of a (usually negative) state or tendency, such as feeling 'a bit tired' or 'coming down with' something. It softens the statement, conveying 'somewhat' rather than fully.

ある(多くは好ましくない)状態や傾向が少しあると感じる・見えることを表す。「少し疲れている」「風邪気味」のように、断定を和らげて『なんとなく~気味』と表現する。

Formation

Verb masu-stem / Noun + 気味(ぎみ)

Examples

  • きょうはすこしかぜぎみなので、はやくかえります。

I'm coming down with a bit of a cold today, so I'll go home early.

  • さいきん、うんどうぶそくでふとりぎみだ。

Lately, due to lack of exercise, I'm putting on a bit of weight.

  • かのじょはすこしつかれぎみにみえた。

    She looked a little tired.

Notes

  • Read 気味 as ぎみ (rendaku) in this suffix usage.接尾語として使うときは「ぎみ」と濁って読む。
  • Means just a 'slight' tendency, weaker than ~がち.「少しだけ」の傾向で、「~がち」より弱い。
  • Common fixed forms: 風邪気味, 疲れ気味, 太り気味.決まった言い方:風邪気味・疲れ気味・太り気味など。
