ばほど

How it works

Expresses that as one thing increases or progresses, another changes proportionally: 'the more... the more...' The same verb/adjective is repeated, first in its ば-conditional form and then in dictionary/plain form + ほど. For na-adjectives and nouns, ~なら~ほど is also used.

あることが進むにつれて、もう一方も比例して変化することを表す。「~ば~ほど(すればするほど)」の形。同じ動詞・形容詞を、最初は「ば形」、次に辞書形・連体形+「ほど」で繰り返す。ナ形容詞・名詞では「~なら~ほど」も使われる。

Formation

Vば + V(辞書形) + ほど / イAければ + イA + ほど / ナAなら/であれば + ナA + なほど

Examples

  • かんがえればかんがえるほどわからなくなります。

The more I think about it, the less I understand.

  • ねだんがたかければたかいほどひんしつがいいとはかぎりません。

It's not necessarily the case that the more expensive something is, the better its quality.

  • にほんごはれんしゅうすればするほどじょうずになります。

The more you practice Japanese, the better you become.

Notes

  • Repeat the same verb/adjective: first as ば-form, then plain form + ほど.同じ語を「ば形+辞書形+ほど」の形で繰り返す。
  • For する it becomes すればするほど; for na-adjectives, ~なら~なほど is common.「する」は「すればするほど」、ナ形容詞は「~なら~なほど」が一般的。
  • The ば part can sometimes be omitted, leaving just ~ほど (例: 考えるほど…).「ば」の部分は省略され「~ほど」だけになることもある。
