How it works

Indicates degree or extent: 'to the extent that / so... that.' It illustrates how strong a state or action is by giving a concrete example ('so tired that I can't stand'). Also appears in the pattern ~ば~ほど ('the more... the more').

程度・度合いを表し、「~くらい・~ほど」の意味。ある状態や動作の程度を具体例で示す(「立てないほど疲れた」=とても疲れた)。「~ば~ほど」(~すればするほど)の形でも使う。

Formation

Noun + ほど / Verb・いadj (plain) + ほど / なadj + な + ほど;~ば~ほど

Examples

  • きょうはたっていられないほどつかれた。

Today I'm so tired I can't even stand.

  • かれのはなしはしんじられないほどおもしろかった。

    His story was unbelievably interesting.

  • れんしゅうすればするほど、じょうずになる。

The more you practice, the better you get.

Notes

  • ~ば~ほど means 'the more X, the more Y' (高ければ高いほど).「~ば~ほど」で「~すればするほど」の意味(高ければ高いほど)。
  • Similar to くらい/ぐらい for expressing degree; ほど sounds slightly stronger/more written for extent.程度を表す点で「くらい/ぐらい」と似るが、「ほど」はやや強め・書き言葉的。
  • In comparisons, ~ほど~ない means 'not as ... as' (see separate point).比較では「~ほど~ない」で「~ほどではない」を表す(別項目参照)。
