～につれて

How it works

Expresses that as one thing gradually changes or progresses, another thing changes along with it in proportion. Both clauses describe natural, gradual change — it cannot be used for deliberate one-time actions. Very close to にしたがって in the 'as ~ changes' meaning.

あるものが少しずつ変化・進行するのに伴って、もう一方もそれに比例して変化することを表します。両方が自然で段階的な変化であることが必要で、意志的な一回きりの動作には使えません。変化の意味では「にしたがって」とほぼ同じです。

• 年を取るにつれて、体力が落ちてきた。

  としをとるにつれて、たいりょくがおちてきた。

  As I get older, my physical strength has declined.

• 都市化が進むにつれて、自然が減っていった。

  としかがすすむにつれて、しぜんがへっていった。

  As urbanization progressed, nature gradually decreased.

• 春が近づくにつれて、だんだん暖かくなる。

  はるがちかづくにつれて、だんだんあたたかくなる。

  As spring approaches, it gradually gets warmer.

Notes

• Both sides must be gradual changes; not for single, deliberate actions.両方が段階的な変化である必要があり、一回きりの意志的動作には使えません。
• Cannot normally take an intentional/volitional verb in the main clause.後半に意志的な動詞は通常来ません。
• Nearly interchangeable with にしたがって for 'as ~ changes', but につれて is only the change meaning (no 'comply with' use).変化の意味では「にしたがって」とほぼ同義ですが、「につれて」に「従う」の意味はありません。
