How it works

Used to ask someone to compare two items and choose which one has a certain quality more. The pattern is 'A と B と、どちらが + adjective?' To answer, you typically use ~のほうが (A のほうが…). For things and places, どちら/どっち is used rather than どれ.

二つのものを比べて、どちらがある性質を多く持つかを尋ねるときに使う。「AとBと、どちらが+形容詞?」の形。答えるときは「Aのほうが~」のように「~のほうが」を使う。物や場所では「どれ」ではなく「どちら/どっち」を使う。

Formation

Noun A と Noun B と、どちらが + Adjective/Verb + か

Examples

  • コーヒーとこうちゃと、どちらがすきですか。

Which do you like better, coffee or black tea?

  • でんしゃとバスと、どちらがはやいですか。

Which is faster, the train or the bus?

  • とうきょうとおおさかと、どちらがひとがおおいですか。

Which has more people, Tokyo or Osaka?

Notes

  • For comparing exactly two items, use どちら/どっち, not どれ (which is for three or more).二択の比較には「どちら/どっち」を使う(三つ以上は「どれ」)。
  • Answer with ~のほうが (例: コーヒーのほうが好きです).答えは「~のほうが」を使う(例:コーヒーのほうが好きです)。
  • どっち is the casual form of どちら; the second と is often dropped in speech.「どっち」はくだけた言い方。話し言葉では二つ目の「と」が省略されることも多い。
