How it works

Expresses that the result is contrary to what one would expect from the first clause, often carrying a feeling of surprise, criticism, or dissatisfaction. Stronger and more emotional than けど/が. Connects with plain forms; na-adjectives and nouns take な (静かなのに, 学生なのに).

前の節から予想される結果と反対のことが起こることを表し、意外・不満・非難などの気持ちを伴うことが多いです。「けど/が」より感情がこもります。普通形に接続し、ナ形容詞・名詞は「な」を介します(静かなのに、学生なのに)。

Formation

普通形 + のに(Naな・Nな + のに)(例:高いのに、静かなのに、子供なのに、勉強したのに)

Examples

  • たくさんべんきょうしたのに、しけんにおちました。

Even though I studied a lot, I failed the exam.

  • まだごがつなのに、もうあついです。

Even though it's still May, it's already hot.

  • このりょうりはやすいのに、とてもおいしいです。

Even though this dish is cheap, it's very delicious.

Notes

  • のに carries emotion (surprise/complaint), unlike the neutral けど or が.「のに」は意外や不満などの感情を含み、中立の「けど・が」とは違います。
  • Na-adjectives and nouns connect with な (元気なのに, 学生なのに).ナ形容詞・名詞は「な」で接続します(元気なのに、学生なのに)。
  • Don't confuse with the purpose use 〜のに ('used for ~ing'), e.g. 漢字を覚えるのに役立つ; here のに means 'although'.用途を表す「〜のに(〜するのに役立つ)」とは別の用法なので混同しないように。
