How it works

When ~ために expresses cause/reason, it links a cause to its (often negative or notable) result: 'because of X, Y happened.' It is more formal than ~から/~ので and is common in writing and news. The cause is usually a fact or situation, not the speaker's volition.

原因・理由を表す「~ために」は、ある原因とその(多くは好ましくない、または注目すべき)結果を結び付け、『XのためにYになった』という意味になります。「~から/~ので」より硬く、書き言葉やニュースでよく使われます。原因は通常、意志ではなく事実や状況です。

Examples

  • おおゆきのために、でんしゃがとまってしまった。

Because of the heavy snow, the trains stopped.

  • じこがあったために、みちがとてもこんでいる。

Because there was an accident, the road is very congested.

  • かれはびょうきのために、がっこうをやすんだ。

He was absent from school because of illness.

Notes

  • Cause ~ために uses plain/dictionary forms and な/の connection; PURPOSE ~ために (to do X) takes the dictionary form with a volitional verb — context distinguishes them.原因の「ために」は普通形・辞書形に「な/の」で接続。目的の「ために」(~するために)は意志動詞の辞書形を取るので、文脈で区別します。
  • The cause use often introduces an unexpected or unfavorable result and sounds formal; in casual speech ~から/~ので are more common.原因用法は予想外・好ましくない結果を導くことが多く、硬い表現です。会話では「から/ので」が一般的。
  • な-adj uses な (静かなために), noun uses の (病気のために).な形容詞は「な」(静かなために)、名詞は「の」(病気のために)。
