How it works

~はずがない is the negative counterpart of ~はずだ. It expresses the speaker's strong conviction, based on reasoning, that something is impossible or extremely unlikely: 'there's no way that...' ~はずはない is a slightly softer variant with the same meaning.

Examples

We practiced so hard, so there's no way we'll lose.

There's no way he would tell such a lie.

There's no way a child could understand such a difficult problem.

Notes

  • The polite form is ~はずがありません.
  • ~はずがない expresses logical impossibility based on reasoning; ~ないはずだ means 'is expected NOT to' and is weaker.「~はずがない」は論理的な不可能性を表し、「~ないはずだ」(~しないと予想される)よりも強い否定です。
  • Compare with ~わけがない, which has nearly the same meaning but can sound more emphatic/colloquial.「~わけがない」もほぼ同義ですが、より強調的・口語的に響くことがあります。
