How it works

Used to tell someone that an action is unnecessary, often to reassure or comfort them. It is stronger and more emphatic than ~なくてもいい, conveying 'there's absolutely no need to.'

Formation

Verb (dictionary/plain form) +

Examples

There's no need to worry that much.

There's no need for you to apologize. He's the one at fault.

There's still time, so there's no need to hurry.

Notes

  • Distinct from the occasional ~ことがある; here ない negates 'need,' not 'occurrence.'「時々~する」の意味の「~ことがある」とは別。
  • Often used to comfort or reassure the listener.
  • More emphatic than ~なくてもいい (you don't have to).「~なくてもいい」より強い表現。
