How it works

The humble (謙譲語) equivalent of ~てもらう. It means the speaker receives the benefit of an action done by someone of higher status. The action-doer is marked with に, and the speaker (recipient) is the grammatical subject.

Formation

Examples

I had the teacher correct my composition (the teacher kindly corrected it for me).

Could you please wait a moment?

Thank you for kindly telling me the way.

Notes

  • The benefit flows to the speaker's side; the doer of the favor takes に, not が.
