How it works
Combines the conditional ~ば with いい to give advice or state a solution — 'you should just X' / 'it would be good if X'. It often presents the simplest thing to do to solve a situation. Question form ~ばいい? asks 'what/how should I...?'.
Formation
Examples
If there's something you don't understand, you should just ask the teacher.
Where should I buy the ticket?
If you're tired, you should just rest a little.
Notes
- Use the ば-conditional form of the verb (聞く→聞けば, する→すれば, 来る→くれば).
- ~ばいいですか politely asks for instructions ('what/where/how should I...?').「~ばいいですか」で「どうすればいいか」と丁寧に尋ねられる。
- Close to ~たらいい; ~ばいい can feel slightly more matter-of-fact when giving a solution.「~たらいい」に近いが、解決策を示すときは「~ばいい」がやや事務的に響くことがある。
