すぎる

How it works

Indicates that an action or state goes beyond the proper or acceptable degree. It usually carries a negative nuance, suggesting the amount, degree, or extent is excessive or problematic.

ある動作や状態が適切な程度を越えていることを表す。多くの場合、量や程度が行きすぎてよくない、というマイナスの気持ちを含む。

Formation

Vます-stem + すぎる / イ-adj (remove い) + すぎる / ナ-adj + すぎる。Note: いい→よすぎる、ない→なさすぎる。

Examples

  • きのう たべすぎて、おなかが いたいです。

I ate too much yesterday, so my stomach hurts.

  • この へやは しずかすぎて、すこし こわいです。

This room is too quiet, so it's a little scary.

  • この かばんは たかすぎて、かえません。

This bag is too expensive, so I can't buy it.

Notes

  • すぎる conjugates as a regular ru-verb (すぎます, すぎて, すぎた).「すぎる」は一段動詞として活用する(すぎます・すぎて・すぎた)。
  • Like 様態 そうだ, the irregulars are いい→よすぎる and ない→なさすぎる.様態の「そうだ」と同じく「いい→よすぎる」「ない→なさすぎる」になる。
  • Usually negative, but in casual speech it can mean 'so X (it's amazing)', e.g. 美味しすぎる.基本はマイナスの意味だが、話し言葉では「美味しすぎる」のように強調として使うこともある。
