How it works

とても is an adverb meaning 'very / extremely', used before adjectives or adverbs to intensify them. In negative sentences it can mean 'cannot possibly' (とても〜ない).

「非常に・たいへん」という意味の副詞で、形容詞や副詞の前について程度を強めます。否定文では「とても〜ない(とても〜できない)」の意味にもなります。

Formation

とても + Adjective/Adverb (intensifier)

Examples

  • このりょうりはとてもおいしいです。

    This dish is very delicious.

  • きょうはとてもさむいです。

    It is very cold today.

  • かのじょはとてもしんせつなひとです。

She is a very kind person.

Notes

  • とても normally modifies adjectives/adverbs, not nouns directly (use a な-adjective: とても親切な人).とてもは形容詞・副詞を修飾し、名詞を直接修飾しません(な形容詞を使う:とても親切な人)。
  • とても is more neutral than the casual すごく; とっても is an emphatic colloquial variant.すごくより中立的で、とってもはさらに強調した口語的な言い方です。
  • とても + negative can mean 'absolutely not / cannot possibly': とてもできません.とても+否定は「とても〜できない(無理だ)」の意味になることがあります。
