How it works
ある states the existence of inanimate things and abstract matters (objects, places, plants, events, plans). The thing that exists is marked with が, and the location is usually marked with に. It also expresses possession of non-living things. The negative is ない (polite ありません), and the past is あった.
Formation
Examples
There is a book on the desk.
There is a meeting tomorrow.

Notes
- Use ある for inanimate things/events and いる for living things (people, animals).
- Plants are treated as inanimate, so they take ある (木がある), not いる.
