How it works
Used when the speaker (or someone close to the speaker) gives something to another person. The giver is marked with は/が, the receiver with に, and the object with を. あげる cannot be used when the receiver is the speaker (or the speaker's in-group) — use もらう or くれる instead.
自分（または自分側の人）が他の人に物を与えるときに使います。あげる人は「は・が」、もらう人は「に」、物は「を」で示します。受け取る側が自分（自分の身内）の場合は使えず、その場合は「もらう」や「くれる」を使います。

わたしは友だちに本をあげました。

Notes
- The receiver is marked with に, never が.もらう人は「に」で示し、「が」は使いません。
- Never use あげる when YOU are the receiver — use もらう (I received) or くれる (someone gave to me).自分が受け取る場合は「あげる」を使わず、「もらう」または「くれる」を使います。
- To a social superior, use the humble さしあげる instead of あげる.目上の人には「あげる」ではなく謙譲語の「さしあげる」を使います。
