How it works

や connects nouns to give a non-exhaustive list — "A and B (among other things)." Unlike と, which lists items completely, や implies there are more examples not mentioned. It is often paired with など ("etc.") to emphasize that the list is just examples.

「や」は名詞をつないで非網羅的な列挙「AやB(など)」を表します。すべてを列挙する「と」と違い、「や」は挙げていない他の例があることを含みます。「など(等)」と一緒に使い、あくまで例であることを強調することが多いです。

Formation

Noun A や + Noun B(や Noun C)(+ など)

Examples

  • つくえのうえにほんやペンがあります。

There are books and pens (among other things) on the desk.

  • しゅうまつはかいものやそうじをします。

On weekends I do shopping and cleaning (among other things).

  • かばんのなかにさいふやかぎなどがあります。

There is a wallet, keys, and so on in the bag.

Notes

  • と lists items exhaustively ("A and B, that's all"); や implies "A, B, and others."「と」は完全列挙(「AとB、それだけ」)、「や」は「A、B、その他」を含みます。
  • や connects nouns only — it cannot join verbs or whole clauses.「や」は名詞だけをつなぎます。動詞や文全体はつなげません。
  • It is frequently used with など at the end of the list to mean "etc."列挙の最後に「など」を付けて「等」の意味でよく使います。
