How it works

と has two main N5 uses: connecting nouns in a complete list ('A and B'), and marking the person you do something together with ('with', often paired with 一緒に). It is also used to mark the partner in mutual actions like meeting or talking.

「と」には主に二つの用法があります。名詞を全部列挙してつなぐ「AとB(AとB)」と、一緒に何かをする相手を示す「〜と(一緒に)」です。会う・話すなど相互動作の相手も示します。

Formation

Noun + と + Noun (list) / Noun(person) + と + verb

Examples

  • パンとたまごをかいました。

    I bought bread and eggs.

  • ともだちとえいがをみます。

    I watch a movie with a friend.

  • ははといっしょにりょうりをします。

I cook together with my mother.

Notes

  • Listing と is exhaustive ('A and B and that's all'); for incomplete lists use や.列挙の「と」は全部を挙げる用法。一部だけを例示するときは「や」を使います。
  • When marking a companion, 一緒に is often added: 友達と一緒に行く.相手を示すときは「一緒に」を加えることが多いです(友達と一緒に行く)。
  • Mutual-action verbs (会う, 話す, 結婚する) take the partner with と: 田中さんと会う.相互動作の動詞(会う・話す・結婚する)は相手を「と」で示します。
