How it works
か is placed at the end of a sentence to make it a question, similar to a question mark. In polite Japanese (です/ます), か is required to form a question. In casual speech it is often dropped and replaced by rising intonation.
「か」は文末に付けて疑問文を作る終助詞で、はてなマークのような働きをします。丁寧な文(です・ます)では「か」が必要です。くだけた会話では省略され、語尾を上げる言い方になることが多いです。
Formation
Sentence (です/ます or plain form) + か
Examples
あなたは学生ですか。
あなたはがくせいですか。
Are you a student?
明日いっしょに行きますか。
あしたいっしょにいきますか。
Will you go together tomorrow?
これはいくらですか。
これはいくらですか。
How much is this?
Notes
- In writing, a question ending in か usually takes a Japanese full stop (。), not a question mark.書き言葉では「か」で終わる疑問文に「?」ではなく「。」を付けるのが普通。
- In casual speech, か is often omitted: 行く? (rising tone) instead of 行きますか.くだけた会話では「か」を省き、語尾を上げて「行く?」のように言うことが多い。
- Adding か after a casual plain form can sound blunt or masculine (行くか); softer is の or just intonation.普通形+「か」(行くか)はぶっきらぼう・男性的に聞こえることがあり、柔らかくは「の」やイントネーションを使う。
