How it works

くらい (often voiced to ぐらい) attaches to a quantity, time, or noun to express an approximate amount or degree. The two forms are interchangeable; ぐらい is slightly more common after numbers in casual speech.

Examples

It takes about ten minutes to the station.

About twenty people came to the party.

This bag is about three thousand yen.

Notes

  • For approximate points in time (like 'around 3 o'clock'), 頃(ごろ) is used instead: 三時ごろ, not 三時くらい (though くらい is fine for durations).「三時ごろ」のように時刻には頃を使い、「十分くらい」のように所要時間や数量にはくらいを使います。
  • くらい・ぐらい states a rough amount; ほど is a more formal alternative with a similar meaning.
