How it works

~ます is the polite non-past verb ending, used for present habitual actions and future actions. It attaches to the verb stem (the ます-form base). It expresses politeness toward the listener and is the standard form for everyday polite conversation.

「〜ます」は動詞のていねいな非過去(現在・未来)の語尾で、習慣的な現在の動作や、これからの動作を表します。動詞の「ます形」の語幹に付きます。聞き手への丁寧さを表し、日常のていねいな会話の基本の形です。

Examples

  • まいあさ、コーヒーをのみます。

    I drink coffee every morning.

  • あした、ともだちにあいます。

    I'll meet a friend tomorrow.

  • わたしはまいにちにほんごをべんきょうします。

    I study Japanese every day.

Notes

  • ~ます covers both present/habitual and future; Japanese has no separate future tense.「〜ます」は現在・習慣と未来の両方を表します。日本語には未来専用の形はありません。
  • The plain (dictionary) equivalent is 〜る / 〜う (e.g. 飲む = 飲みます); use plain forms in casual speech.普通形(辞書形)は「〜る・〜う」です(飲む=飲みます)。くだけた会話では普通形を使います。
  • Past polite is 〜ました and polite negative is 〜ません.過去の丁寧形は「〜ました」、否定は「〜ません」です。
