How it works
The polite past affirmative form of verbs. Replace ます with ました to say that an action was completed in the past. It is the past-tense counterpart of ~ます.
動詞の丁寧形の過去・肯定形です。「ます」を「ました」に変えると、過去に行われた動作を丁寧に表せます。「〜ます」の過去形にあたります。
Formation
Vます-stem + ました (e.g. 食べます → 食べました, 行きます → 行きました)
Examples
きのう、映画を見ました。
きのう、えいがをみました。
I watched a movie yesterday.
先週、京都へ行きました。
せんしゅう、きょうとへいきました。
I went to Kyoto last week.
もう昼ご飯を食べましたか。
もうひるごはんをたべましたか。
Have you already eaten lunch?
Notes
- Only the ます ending changes; the verb stem stays the same.変わるのは「ます」の部分だけで、動詞の語幹はそのままです。
- Use this polite form with people you are not close to or in formal situations; the plain past equivalent is the た-form (例: 見た).親しくない相手や丁寧な場面で使います。普通体の過去は「た形」(例:見た)です。
- Add か to make a polite past question (見ましたか).「か」を付けると丁寧な過去の疑問文になります(見ましたか)。
