~な→~じゃない

na-adjective negative (is not ...)

な形容詞の否定形(〜じゃない・〜ではない)

JLPT
N5
Register
neutral

How it works

To make the negative of a na-adjective, drop the な and add じゃない (casual) or ではない (slightly more formal). For polite speech use じゃないです / ではありません. Na-adjectives behave like nouns with the copula, so the negative is the same as the noun negative.

な形容詞の否定形は、「な」を取って「じゃない」(くだけた言い方)か「ではない」(少しかたい)を付けます。ていねいに言うときは「じゃないです」「ではありません」を使います。な形容詞は名詞と同じくコピュラを使うので、否定形は名詞の否定形と同じです。

Formation

na-adj (drop な) + じゃない / ではない (casual) ; じゃないです / ではありません (polite)

Examples

  • このもんだいはかんたんじゃない。

    This problem isn't easy.

  • かれはやきゅうがすきじゃないです。

    He doesn't like baseball.

  • このとおりはあまりしずかではありません。

    This street isn't very quiet.

Notes

  • Na-adjective negatives use じゃない / ではない (like nouns), not くない (which is for i-adjectives).な形容詞の否定は名詞と同じ「じゃない・ではない」を使います。「くない」はい形容詞用なので使いません。
  • じゃない is casual; ではない / ではありません is more formal. じゃないです and ではありません are both polite.「じゃない」はくだけた言い方、「ではない・ではありません」は少しかたい言い方です。
  • Past negative: じゃなかった (casual) / ではありませんでした (polite).過去の否定は「じゃなかった」(くだけた)/「ではありませんでした」(ていねい)です。
