How it works
The polite past negative form of verbs. It expresses that an action did not happen in the past. It combines the negative ~ません with the past marker でした.
動詞の丁寧形の過去・否定形です。過去に動作が行われなかったことを表します。否定の「〜ません」に過去の「でした」が付いた形です。
Formation
Vます-stem + ませんでした (e.g. 食べます → 食べませんでした, 行きます → 行きませんでした)
Examples
きのうは何も食べませんでした。
きのうはなにもたべませんでした。
I didn't eat anything yesterday.
昨日のパーティーに行きませんでした。
きのうのパーティーにいきませんでした。
I didn't go to yesterday's party.
先生は来ませんでした。
せんせいはきませんでした。
The teacher didn't come.
Notes
- This is the past form of ~ません, not ~じゃありませんでした (which is for nouns/na-adjectives).これは「〜ません」の過去形で、名詞・な形容詞に使う「〜じゃありませんでした」とは別です。
- Do not say ~なかったです in the polite ます-form; for verbs the standard polite past negative is ~ませんでした.丁寧形(ます形)では「〜なかったです」とは言わず、動詞の過去否定は「〜ませんでした」が標準です。
- Add か for a polite past-negative question (行きませんでしたか).「か」を付けると丁寧な過去否定の疑問文になります(行きませんでしたか)。
