polite

How it works

~ません is the polite negative non-past verb ending: the negative counterpart of ~ます. It means 'do not / will not (do)' and attaches to the verb stem. It can also form a polite invitation when used as a question (~ませんか, 'won't you...?').

「〜ません」は動詞のていねいな否定(非過去)の語尾で、「〜ます」の否定形です。「〜しない・〜しないつもりだ」という意味で、動詞の語幹に付きます。疑問にすると(〜ませんか)ていねいな勧誘(〜しませんか)にもなります。

Formation

Verb stem (ます-stem) + ません

Examples

  • わたしはおさけをのみません。

    I don't drink alcohol.

  • にちようびははたらきません。

    I don't work on Sundays.

  • いっしょにえいがをみませんか。

Won't you watch a movie with me?

Notes

  • ~ません is the negative of ~ます; the plain equivalent is 〜ない (飲まない).「〜ません」は「〜ます」の否定で、普通形は「〜ない」です(飲まない)。
  • ~ませんか is a polite way to invite someone ('won't you...?'); ~ましょうか offers to do something.「〜ませんか」はていねいな勧誘(〜しませんか)になります。「〜ましょうか」は申し出です。
  • Past polite negative is 〜ませんでした ('did not ...').過去の丁寧な否定は「〜ませんでした」です。
