How it works

Expresses that something is the proper, expected, or morally right thing to do based on common sense, social norms, or duty. Stronger and more principled than ~たほうがいい—it conveys 'that's how it should be.'

Formation

Verb dictionary form + べきだ。する is irregular: するべきだ or すべきだ (both acceptable). Past judgment: ~べきだった (should have).

Examples

    You should keep your promises.

I think students should take their classes seriously.

I should have gone to the doctor sooner.

Notes

  • する becomes すべき or するべき; both are correct, すべき is slightly more formal.「する」は「すべき」か「するべき」になり、どちらも正しい(「すべき」がやや硬い)。
  • Not normally used for natural laws/inevitable facts (use はずだ for expectation).
  • Avoid using べきだ to tell a clear superior what to do; it can sound presumptuous.
