How it works

Negative te-form (なくて) + もいい means "don't have to ~ / it's okay not to ~." It expresses that an action is unnecessary.

Formation

Examples

You don't have to come tomorrow.

You don't have to eat all of it.

    You don't have to hurry.

Notes

  • Formed from the ない-form by changing ~ない to ~なくて, then adding もいい.
  • It is the negative-necessity counterpart of ~なければならない ("must").「〜なければならない」(〜しなければならない)の「不要」を表す対の表現です。
