How it works

Expresses obligation or necessity, very close in meaning to ~なければならない. It often points to a more specific, situational, or personal obligation and sounds slightly more conversational. Literally 'if (you) don't do X, it won't go (well).'

Formation

Examples

It's already time I have to go.

You have to take this medicine after meals.

Since I promised, I absolutely have to go.

Notes

  • Often used for a specific obligation tied to the current situation, vs. the more general ~
  • いけない can be written 行けない but is usually kept in kana here.「いけない」は通常ひらがなで書きます。
