How it works

Used to give advice or a recommendation that one course of action is better than another. With the past tense (〜たほうがいい) it gives stronger, more direct advice; the negative is 〜ないほうがいい (had better not).

Formation

Vた-form + ほうがいい (advice to do) / Vない + ほうがいい (advice not to do).

Examples

If you have a fever, you'd better go to the hospital.

You'd better not drink coffee at night.

    You'd better eat more vegetables.

Notes

  • For affirmative advice, the た-form (past) is the standard, more natural choice: 行ったほうがいい rather than 行くほうがいい.
  • Adding よ at the end softens it into friendly advice; without よ it can sound more like a fact.
  • The negative attaches to plain ない, not the past: 飲まないほうがいい (NOT 飲まなかったほうがいい).
