How it works

A soft but firm command form, derived from the imperative of なさる (the honorific of する). It is commonly used by parents to children, teachers to students, and on exam/instruction sheets. It is gentler than the bare imperative (命令形) but still clearly an order, so it is not used toward superiors.

Formation

Examples

    Go to bed early.

    Eat your vegetables properly too.

Answer the following questions in Japanese.

Notes

  • Attaches to the ます-stem, not the dictionary form (食べなさい, not 食べるなさい).
  • Used downward (to children, students); never toward superiors.
  • The casual shortened form ~な (e.g. 食べな) drops the さい and sounds rougher/more familiar.「食べな」のように「さい」を省くと、よりくだけた・ぞんざいな響きになります。
