How it works

Used to state a scheduled or arranged plan that has already been decided, often as part of a fixed schedule. It is more objective and concrete than つもり or ~ようと思う, frequently used for itineraries, appointments, and official arrangements.

すでに決まっている予定やスケジュールを述べるときに使う。「つもり」や「ようと思う」より客観的・確定的で、旅行の行程・約束・公式な予定などによく使われる。

Examples

  • らいしゅうのげつようびにおおさかへしゅっちょうするよていです。

I'm scheduled to go on a business trip to Osaka next Monday.

  • かいぎはごごさんじからのよていです。

The meeting is scheduled to start from 3 p.m.

  • ひこうきはじゅうじにとうちゃくするよていでしたが、おくれています。

The plane was scheduled to arrive at ten, but it's delayed.

Notes

  • With nouns and time expressions, use の: 三時の予定, 来週の予定.名詞や時間表現に付くときは「の」を入れる(三時の予定・来週の予定)。
  • Implies the plan is concrete and arranged, not merely a personal wish; for softer intentions use つもり.個人的な願望ではなく確定した予定を表すので、柔らかい意図には「つもり」を使う。
  • Often appears in past tense (予定でした) when a plan didn't go as arranged.予定が実現しなかった場合は過去形「予定でした」がよく使われる。
