How it works

Place pronouns: ここ = here (near speaker), そこ = there (near listener), あそこ = over there (far from both). The question word is どこ (where).

場所を指す代名詞です。ここ=話し手の近く、そこ=聞き手の近く、あそこ=両者から遠い場所。疑問詞はどこ(どこに)です。

Formation

ここ・そこ・あそこ・どこ (used as place nouns, can take は/に/で/へ etc.)

Examples

  • ここはトイレです。

    This is the restroom (here).

  • そこにすわってください。

    Please sit there (near you).

  • あそこにコンビニがあります。

There is a convenience store over there.

Notes

  • These behave like nouns, so they take particles such as は, に, で, へ (ここで, そこに, あそこへ).名詞のように働くので、は・に・で・へなどの助詞をつけられます(ここで、そこに、あそこへ)。
  • More polite/formal place words are こちら・そちら・あちら・どちら, which can also indicate direction.より丁寧・改まった言い方はこちら・そちら・あちら・どちらで、方向も表せます。
