How it works

These こ・そ・あ・ど pronouns stand alone to point at things. これ = near the speaker, それ = near the listener, あれ = far from both, どれ = which one (question, choosing among three or more).

物を指す代名詞です。これは話し手の近く、それは聞き手の近く、あれは両者から遠いもの、どれは三つ以上から選ぶときの「どれ」を表します。

Formation

これ・それ・あれ・どれ (used alone as a pronoun, not before a noun)

Examples

  • これはわたしのほんです。

    This is my book.

  • それはいくらですか。

How much is that (near you)?

  • あなたのかさはどれですか。

    Which one is your umbrella?

Notes

  • These are pronouns and stand alone; do NOT put a noun after them (use この・その・あの・どの + noun instead).これらは代名詞なので、後ろに名詞をつけません。名詞の前ではこの・その・あの・どのを使います。
  • Use どれ when choosing among three or more; use どちら/どっち when choosing between two.三つ以上から選ぶときはどれ、二つから選ぶときはどちら・どっちを使います。
