どこ

How it works

どこ is the question word for 'where', asking about a location. It combines with particles: どこに/どこで (where, location/action site), どこへ (to where), どこから (from where), どこまで (to where/how far). The polite equivalent is どちら.

「どこ」は場所を尋ねる疑問詞「where」です。助詞と組み合わせて「どこに・どこで」（場所・動作の場所）、「どこへ」（行き先）、「どこから」「どこまで」のように使います。丁寧な言い方は「どちら」です。

Notes

• Use どこに for existence/destination and どこで for where an action takes place (どこで買いますか).存在や到着点は「どこに」、動作が行われる場所は「どこで」（どこで買いますか）。
• どこか = 'somewhere', どこも + negative = 'nowhere'; か/も change the meaning.「どこか」は「somewhere」、「どこも＋否定」は「nowhere」。か・もで意味が変わる。
• どちら is the polite form and also means 'which (of two)'.「どちら」は丁寧な言い方で、「二つのうちどちら」の意味もある。
