How it works

These こ・そ・あ・ど demonstratives come directly before a noun to specify it. この (near speaker), その (near listener), あの (far from both), どの (which, among three or more).

名詞の前について、その名詞を指し示す連体詞です。この(話し手に近い)、その(聞き手に近い)、あの(両者から遠い)、どの(三つ以上からどれの意味)。

Examples

  • このほんはおもしろいです。

    This book is interesting.

  • そのひとをしっていますか。

Do you know that person (near you)?

  • どのでんしゃにのりますか。

    Which train will you take?

Notes

  • Always followed by a noun; never used alone. To use alone, switch to これ・それ・あれ・どれ.必ず名詞が後ろにつきます。単独では使えず、その場合はこれ・それ・あれ・どれを使います。
  • あの is also used before a noun the speaker and listener both already know (e.g. あの店, 'that shop we both know').あのは、話し手と聞き手の両方が知っている物事を指すときにも使います(例:あの店)。
