How it works

A comparison pattern. 「BよりAのほうが~」means "A is more ~ than B," where A is the item with the higher degree. より marks the standard of comparison (the 'than' part), and のほうが marks the item that is greater. The order can be flexible, but のほうが always attaches to the item you are emphasizing as more.

比較を表す文型です。「BよりAのほうが~」で「BよりAのほうが~だ」という意味になり、Aが程度の高いほうです。「より」は比較の基準(「~より」)を、「のほうが」は程度が上のものを示します。語順は入れ替え可能ですが、「のほうが」は強調したい(より上の)ほうに付きます。

Formation

Noun B より + Noun A のほうが + 形容詞/述語(A is more...)

Examples

  • でんしゃよりくるまのほうがはやいです。

A car is faster than a train.

  • なつよりふゆのほうがすきです。

I like winter more than summer.

  • きのうよりきょうのほうがあついです。

    Today is hotter than yesterday.

Notes

  • With nouns, のほうが is used (車のほうが); の is dropped after a verb (行くほうがいい).名詞には「のほうが」を付け(車のほうが)、動詞の後では「の」を省きます(行くほうがいい)。
  • You can omit either part: 「車のほうが速い」or「電車より速い」are both fine alone.どちらか一方を省略可能で、「車のほうが速い」「電車より速い」のどちらも単独で使えます。
  • In a question, 「AとB(と)どちらのほうが~ですか」asks which of two is more.質問では「AとB(と)どちらのほうが~ですか」で二つのうちどちらが上かを尋ねます。
