をもらう

How it works

Used when the speaker (or someone in the speaker's in-group) receives something from another person. The receiver is marked with は/が, the giver with に or から, and the object with を. The focus is on the act of receiving.

自分(または自分側の人)が他の人から物を受け取るときに使います。もらう人は「は・が」、くれる人は「に」または「から」、物は「を」で示します。受け取るという行為に焦点があります。

Formation

もらう人 は + あげた人 に/から + Noun を + もらう

Examples

  • わたしはともだちにほんをもらいました。

I received a book from my friend.

  • ははからてがみをもらいました。

I received a letter from my mother.

  • せんせいにいいじしょをもらいました。

I received a good dictionary from my teacher.

Notes

  • The giver can be marked with either に or から; から is more common when the source is an organization (e.g. 会社から).くれる人は「に」でも「から」でも示せますが、相手が組織のときは「から」(例:会社から)が自然です。
  • もらう describes the receiver's perspective; くれる describes the giver's action toward the speaker.「もらう」は受け取る側の視点、「くれる」は与える側の視点で言う動詞です。
  • When receiving from a social superior, the humble verb いただく is used instead of もらう.目上の人から受け取るときは、謙譲語の「いただく」を使います。
