How it works

一番 (いちばん) means 'the most' or 'number one' and is used before an adjective or verb to form the superlative. It often appears in 〜の中で 一番… ('the most … among …').

「最も・第一」という意味で、形容詞や動詞の前について最上級を作ります。「〜の中で一番…」の形で『〜の中で最も…』をよく表します。

Formation

(Group + の中で) + 一番 + Adjective/Verb

Examples

  • ふじさんはにほんでいちばんたかいやまです。

Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.

  • くだもののなかでりんごがいちばんすきです。

Among fruits, I like apples the most.

  • このクラスでかれがいちばんはやくはしります。

In this class, he runs the fastest.

Notes

  • For 'the most among a group', use 〜の中で or place + で: 日本で一番, クラスの中で一番.範囲を示すときは〜の中でや場所+でを使います(日本で一番、クラスの中で一番)。
  • 一番 also literally means 'number one / first' (e.g. 一番ホーム, platform 1).一番は文字どおり「第一・1番」の意味でも使います(一番ホームなど)。
  • For comparing just two things, use 〜のほうが…, not 一番.二つを比べるときは一番ではなく〜のほうが…を使います。
