How it works

~までに marks a deadline: an action must be completed by/before a certain point in time. It is a one-time action that finishes at or before the limit. This contrasts with 〜まで, which marks the end point of a continuous action ('until').

「~までに」は期限を表し、ある時点までに動作を完了させなければならないことを示す。期限までに一回で終わる動作。継続する動作の終わりを表す「~まで(~するまでずっと)」とは区別する。

Formation

Noun (time) + までに / Verb (plain non-past) + までに

Examples

  • きんようびまでにレポートをだしてください。

Please submit the report by Friday.

  • ごじまでにえきにつかなければならない。

I have to arrive at the station by five o'clock.

  • りょうしんがかえってくるまでに、へやをきれいにしておこう。

I'll get the room clean by the time my parents come home.

Notes

  • Use 〜までに for a one-time action with a deadline; use 〜まで for an action that continues up to a point ('until').期限内に一回で終わる動作は「までに」、ある時点まで継続する動作は「まで」を使う。
  • Example contrast: 五時まで待つ (wait until 5) vs 五時までに行く (go by 5).対比例:五時まで待つ/五時までに行く。
  • Verb before までに is plain non-past (帰ってくるまでに).動詞は辞書形(非過去)に付く(帰ってくるまでに)。
