How it works

Indicates that the main action happens before another action, event, or amount of time. The verb before 前に is always in the dictionary (plain non-past) form regardless of the tense of the whole sentence. With nouns use の前に, and with time spans use 数量 + 前に.

主たる動作が別の動作・出来事・時間の前に起こることを表します。「前に」の前の動詞は、文全体の時制に関係なく必ず辞書形(プレーンな非過去)です。名詞には「の前に」、時間の長さには「数量+前に」を使います。

Formation

V辞書形 + 前に / Nの + 前に / 時間量 + 前に(例:食べる前に、食事の前に、三年前に)

Examples

  • ねるまえにはをみがきます。

I brush my teeth before going to bed.

  • しょくじのまえにてをあらってください。

Please wash your hands before the meal.

  • にほんへくるまえにすこしにほんごをべんきょうしました。

Before coming to Japan, I studied a little Japanese.

Notes

  • The verb before 前に stays in dictionary form even when the sentence is past tense (来る前に勉強した, not 来た前に).文が過去でも「前に」の前は辞書形のままです(○来る前に勉強した ×来た前に)。
  • Use の前に after nouns (食事の前に) and 〜前に after time amounts (二日前に).名詞には「の前に」、時間量には「〜前に」を付けます。
  • Contrast with 後で (after), which takes the た-form: 食べた後で.対になる「後で」は「た形」を取る点に注意(食べた後で)。
