How it works

Indicates doing something within a period before a current state changes — 'while it still is ~ / before it becomes otherwise'. Often used with a negative (〜ないうちに = before ~ happens). It also expresses an unintended change that gradually occurs while doing something (〜ているうちに = while doing ~, gradually ...).

Formation

Examples

Please eat it while it's still warm.

Let's go home before it gets dark.

While I was living in Japan, my Japanese gradually got better.

Notes

  • 〜ないうちに means 'before ~ happens' and stresses acting before an unwanted change occurs.「~ないうちに」は「~する前に」で、好ましくない変化が起こる前に行動する気持ちを表す。
  • Compare with 〜間に: うちに emphasizes acting before a change, while 間に simply marks a span of time.「間に」は単に時間の幅を示すが、「うちに」は変化が起こる前にという気持ちが強い。
