How it works

~がる turns an adjective of feeling/desire (which normally describes only the speaker's own feelings) into a verb describing the OUTWARD signs of someone ELSE's feelings: 'shows signs of being ~ / seems to ~'. Use 〜がる for habitual/general behavior and 〜がっている for a feeling shown right now. It cannot describe your own feelings.

「~がる」は、本来自分の感情にしか使えない感情・願望の形容詞を動詞化し、第三者の感情の外見的な様子「~がる(~そうにする)」を表す。習慣的・一般的な様子には「~がる」、今その場で見せている様子には「~がっている」を使う。自分の感情には使えない。

Formation

い-adj stem (drop い) + がる / な-adj stem + がる / Vたい→たがる (ほしい→ほしがる, 寒い→寒がる, 嫌→嫌がる)

Examples

  • こどもがあたらしいゲームをほしがっている。

The child wants a new game (is showing he wants it).

  • いもうとはちゅうしゃをいつもいやがる。

My little sister always hates (dislikes) getting injections.

  • おとうとはいぬをこわがって、ちかづこうとしない。

My little brother is afraid of dogs and won't go near them.

Notes

  • Use only for other people's feelings, never your own (私は寒がる is wrong; say 私は寒い).自分の感情には使わず、他人の様子に使う(×私は寒がる→○私は寒い)。
  • ほしい→ほしがる and 〜たい→〜たがる take the object marker を, not が (ゲームをほしがる).「ほしい→ほしがる」「~たい→~たがる」は対象を「を」で示す(ゲームをほしがる)。
  • 〜がる = general/habitual tendency; 〜がっている = the feeling shown at this moment.「~がる」は習慣・傾向、「~がっている」は今その場の様子。
