How it works
Has two related meanings: (1) 'instead of / in place of' — doing B rather than A; (2) 'in exchange for / to make up for' — B compensates or trades off against A. The exact meaning depends on context; a trade-off reading often pairs a good point with a bad point.
二つの意味がある。(1)「代用」=Aの代わりにBをする。(2)「交換・代償」=Aの埋め合わせ・引き換えにBがある。文脈で判断する。交換の意味では、長所と短所を対比させることが多い。

Notes
- With nouns, always use のかわりに (バターのかわりに).名詞には必ず「の」をつける(例:バターのかわりに)。
- The 'trade-off' meaning often balances a drawback against a benefit (or vice versa).「交換・代償」の意味では、短所と長所を対比させることが多い。
- Can be written 代わりに in kanji; both readings/spellings are common.漢字では「代わりに」と書く。
