How it works

Used to grant permission or indicate that something is acceptable: 'it's okay even if...'. かまわない means 'I don't mind / it doesn't matter', so it sounds a bit more permissive or indifferent than ~てもいい. With the negative ~なくてもかまわない it means 'you don't have to'.

許可を与えたり、ある事柄が問題ないことを示す。「かまわない(構わない)」は「気にしない・差し支えない」の意味なので、「~てもいい」よりやや許容的・無関心なニュアンス。否定形「~なくてもかまわない」は「~しなくてもよい」の意味になる。

Formation

Verb て-form + もかまわない / いadj(く)+てもかまわない / なadj・Noun + でもかまわない

Examples

  • ここにすわってもかまいませんか。

Do you mind if I sit here?

  • ねだんがたかくてもかまわないので、いいものがほしい。

I don't mind if it's expensive; I want something good.

  • あしたはこなくてもかまいません。

You don't have to come tomorrow.

Notes

  • Nearly interchangeable with ~てもいい, but かまわない conveys more 'I don't mind / it's no problem.'「~てもいい」とほぼ同じだが、「かまわない」は「気にしない・差し支えない」というニュアンスが強い。
  • Polite form is ~てもかまいません; the question ~てもかまいませんか politely asks permission.丁寧形は「~てもかまいません」。「~てもかまいませんか」で丁寧に許可を求められる。
  • For nouns and な-adjectives, use でもかまわない (静かでもかまわない).名詞・な形容詞には「でもかまわない」を使う(例:静かでもかまわない)。
