~はんめん

How it works

~反面 contrasts two opposite aspects of the SAME subject—typically one good and one bad side. It is similar to 〜一方で but more strongly emphasizes that the two sides are contrasting (often a trade-off: an advantage paired with a disadvantage).

「~反面」は、同じ主語が持つ正反対の二つの面(多くは良い面と悪い面)を対比する。「~一方で」に似ているが、対立する二面性(長所と短所のようなトレードオフ)をより強調する。

Formation

Verb/い-adj (plain) + 反面 / な-adj + な(である)+反面 / Noun + である+反面

Examples

  • このくすりはよくきくはんめん、ふくさようがつよい。

This medicine works well, but on the other hand it has strong side effects.

  • とかいのせいかつはべんりなはんめん、おかねがかかる。

Life in the city is convenient, but on the other hand it costs money.

  • かれはきびしいはんめん、せいとのことをよくかんがえている。

He is strict, but on the other hand he thinks carefully about his students.

Notes

  • Both clauses must describe the same subject; the two facts contrast (often good vs. bad).前後は同じ主語で、対立する二面(良い面と悪い面など)を述べる。
  • More clearly 'opposite/trade-off' than 〜一方で, which can simply present two parallel facts.単に二つの事実を並べる「~一方で」より、反対・トレードオフの意味が強い。
  • な-adjectives take な (便利な反面), nouns take である (プロである反面).な形容詞は「な」、名詞は「である」を付ける(便利な反面)。
