~いっぽうで

How it works

~一方で contrasts two coexisting facts, situations, or aspects of the same thing. It presents one side and then introduces another, often opposite or different, side. It is neutral in tone and common in both spoken and written Japanese, especially in explanations and essays.

「~一方で」は、同時に存在する二つの事柄や、一つの物事の二つの面を対比させる表現。一方の面を述べ、もう一方の(しばしば反対の)面を導く。書き言葉・話し言葉の両方、特に説明や論説でよく使われる。

Formation

Verb/い-adj (plain) + 一方で / な-adj + な+一方で / Noun + である一方で

Examples

  • あにはそとであそぶのがすきないっぽうで、おとうとはいえでほんをよむのがすきだ。

My older brother likes playing outside, while my younger brother likes reading books at home.

  • このしごとはきゅうりょうがたかいいっぽうで、せきにんもおもい。

This job pays well, but on the other hand the responsibility is also heavy.

  • としのじんこうがふえるいっぽうで、ちほうのじんこうはへっている。

While the population of cities is increasing, the population of rural areas is decreasing.

Notes

  • Used to compare two sides of a topic; both clauses are stated as facts.一つの話題の二つの面を比べるときに使い、両方とも事実として述べる。
  • Do not confuse with 〜一方だ (V-dictionary + 一方だ = 'keep ~ing more and more'), which means a one-directional trend.「~一方だ」(動詞辞書形+一方だ=ますます~する)とは意味が違うので注意。
  • な-adjectives take な (好きな一方で), nouns take である (学生である一方で).な形容詞は「な」、名詞は「である」を付ける(学生である一方で)。
