How it works

Attaches to the verb stem to express that an action is done excessively, to an undesirable degree. (It also attaches to い/な-adjective stems.) すぎる conjugates as an る-verb (すぎる → すぎて, すぎた). It usually carries a negative 'too much' nuance.

動詞のます形の語幹に付いて、動作が過度に・度を超えて行われることを表します(い形容詞・な形容詞の語幹にも付きます)。すぎるは一段動詞として活用します(すぎて、すぎた)。多くは「~しすぎてよくない」という否定的なニュアンスを含みます。

Formation

Vます-stem + すぎる (e.g. 食べ + すぎる → 食べすぎる); also イ-adj stem / ナ-adj stem + すぎる

Examples

  • きのうはおさけをのみすぎて、あたまがいたい。

I drank too much sake yesterday, so my head hurts.

  • かんがえすぎると、かえってきめられなくなる。

If you think about it too much, you actually become unable to decide.

  • かれははたらきすぎて、びょうきになってしまった。

He worked too much and ended up getting sick.

Notes

  • Use the ます-stem for verbs: 食べすぎる (correct), not 食べるすぎる.動詞ではます形の語幹に付けます。食べすぎる(○)/食べるすぎる(×)。
  • With adjectives, drop い (高い→高すぎる) and drop な (静か→静かすぎる).い形容詞はいを取り(高い→高すぎる)、な形容詞はなを取ります(静か→静かすぎる)。
  • It generally implies the excess is a problem; it is not a neutral 'a lot.'単に「たくさん」ではなく、「度を超えてよくない」という含みがあるのが普通です。
