How it works

Attaches to the verb stem to mean carrying an action through to completion, to the very end, or to an extreme limit. The negative form ~きれない often means 'cannot do completely' (e.g. too much to finish).

Formation

Examples

I finished eating all the food that was served.

This book is too long; I can't finish reading it in one day.

Having run the marathon all the way to the end, he cried.

Notes

  • Use the ます-stem: 食べきる (correct), not 食べるきる.
  • ~きれない (negative potential) is very common, meaning 'cannot do completely / too many to finish.'
  • Beyond literal completion, ~きる can express reaching an emotional/physical extreme (e.g. 疲れきる = utterly exhausted).
